Your work is good enough. Your website probably isn't.

The best tradespeople in London aren't the busiest ones. The most visible ones are. The modern internet fundamentally works against sole traders. Its complexity is so impossible to unwind, 96.55% of websites get no traffic from Google at all.

Built by a tradesman

Websites for the trade, built by the trade.

I transitioned from laying floors on large sites to building my hard surface repair business from the ground up.

Armed with experience in the building industry, an academic background in physics and computer science, and experience building Android and web apps, I pressed my advantages and decided to take on my competitors on the web.

A few websites later Londonbuilt was founded as the only freelance web design option directly aimed at traders.

The Hidden Cost of Trusting Google Ads
The default settings alone can render a campaign almost entirely useless before it has had a chance to prove itself.
Your Van's Paid Off. Your Website Should Be Too.
Every significant purchase you have made in your working life has, at some point, stopped costing you money and started working for you instead.
"Page One in 30 Days" — They're Lying to You
The gap between the day a website goes live and the day it starts generating work is longer than most designers are willing to admit.

The Collapse of the Old World — and What Replaced It

The traditional route to finding work — word of mouth, a listing in Yellow Pages, a van with a phone number — has essentially disappeared. My grandad was one the only plumbers in the area, earning a living off a few words in the local paper and his reputation.

Now word-of-mouth recommendation is being replaced with online customer reviews. The sole trader who ignores this shift does so at serious commercial risk.

With increasing business costs, many of us don't have the weeks of time needed to properly launch a well put together website, and turn to a template option like Squarespace. While convenient in the short term, you lose the ability to differentiate your website behind the scenes. Google sees a template site on a new un-trusted domain, and finds the shallow pages indistinguishable from spam content, and places you in 'the sandbox'.¹

The Ownership Problem: Building on Rented Land

The most strategically important insight for sole trader tradesmen in 2026 is this: investing exclusively in third-party platforms is building a reputation and a business on someone else's land.

With Checkatrade, once the money leaves your account, it is gone. You are not building an asset you own — you are paying a recurring business expense. If you stop paying, your presence vanishes immediately, leaving nothing to show for years of investment.

With your own website, you own your online presence outright. A well-optimised trade website targeting a local area can generate leads directly from Google, and those leads come directly to you with no middleman taking a cut and no competing listings shown alongside yours. Over time, a good local SEO presence compounds in value. Your Checkatrade listing does not.

The Race to the Bottom on Price

Perhaps the most corrosive long-term effect of online platforms is what they do to pricing. The entire architecture of these platforms — multiple tradespeople bidding on the same job, customer reviews as the primary currency, easy comparison tools — creates structural pressure to undercut.

A lot of the enquiries coming through platforms are people comparing five quotes and going with the cheapest. Big companies have bigger marketing budgets, dedicated marketing teams, professional websites, and paid ads running constantly — making it easy for sole traders to feel they can't compete. The paradox is that the local sole trader with deep area knowledge and personal accountability often delivers a better service — but the online environment makes it structurally difficult to communicate and monetise that advantage.

Starting to build trust with search engines early can be transformative for small businesses. In the age of AI duplicated pages, Google's spam policies now explicitly cover Scaled Content Abuse. Meaning your biggest competitor with the 200 page website is stuck with a site too big to adapt to the rapidly changing environment, providing corners of opportunity for smaller businesses.

A custom site provides the face of your business

As you might expect from someone who chose hard surface repair as their trade, I'm a total perfectionist. Ignoring economic reasons, I just wasn't proud of the template site I threw together when I began my solo business. You take pride in your work, don't let your website undermine it.

My custom trade website package

Google isn't punishing new domains — it is waiting for proof that a real, legitimate business exists. Everything I build must accelerate delivery of that proof. For you, the good news is local SEO signals are achievable without huge resources, the bad news is they require deliberate, expert execution.²

I offer custom sites in a single compact package. All my sites are built from a core set of first-principles, to ensure speed, beauty, and intelligent code structure. Flick through to the sections below to see exactly how I build my websites, and what you'll get if you commission one from me.

Every site is built the same way. Here's what that means and why each choice matters.

Competitor analysis

Before I write a line of code, I look at who currently ranks in your area for your trade. I find what they're doing badly. Then I build you a site that beats them there, not where they're already strong.

DNS & certificates

Domain registration, DNS configuration, and SSL certificates handled end-to-end. Your site loads securely from day one with no mixed-content warnings or broken padlocks.

SEO

Root layout metadata, site content built from the ground up to score for chosen keywords, image alt text, optimised heading handling, sitemaps submitted to Google, NAP consistency built into the site architecture.

export const metadata: Metadata = {
  metadataBase: new URL('https://yourdomain.com'),
  title: {
    default: 'Default Title',
    template: '%s | Brand Name',
  },
  description: '...',
  verification: { google: 'VERIFICATION_CODE' },
}

Schema markup

Structured data that tells Google exactly what your business does, where you work, and what services you offer. Most trade sites don't have it. It's one of the clearest signals to search engines that you're a legitimate local business.

// Schema (JSON-LD) in root layout for LocalBusiness
// Key fields:
name, url, image, telephone, email
address { streetAddress, addressLocality, postalCode }
areaServed, priceRange, openingHours
aggregateRating, sameAs

<script
  type="application/ld+json"
  dangerouslySetInnerHTML={{ __html: JSON.stringify(schema) }}
/>

Techstack

Next.js

Fast by default, built for search engines, renders correctly on every device. Not a theme someone else designed — written from scratch for your business.

Vercel Blob

Storage and database. Your images and data live on fast, global infrastructure with no third-party hosting bills.

Vercel

Quickly becoming industry standard, your site goes live and stays live. Vercel Analytics + Speed Insights. No monthly platform fees.

// app/layout.tsx
import { Analytics } from '@vercel/analytics/next'
import { SpeedInsights } from '@vercel/speed-insights/next'

// In <body>:
<Analytics />
<SpeedInsights />

Resend

Contact forms go directly to your inbox rather than disappearing into a spam folder.

// app/api/contact/route.ts
export async function POST(req: NextRequest) {
  const resend = new Resend(process.env.RESEND_API_KEY)
  const formData = await req.formData()
  // parse fields, send email
  return NextResponse.json({ ok: true })
}

Simple pricing. No surprises.

Beyond ads and lead platforms, simply maintaining a competitive digital presence requires ongoing expenditure that most sole traders are not trained or resourced to manage.

A custom site begins to unravel this cycle. Money invested doesn't disappear, it compounds over time. Not only is good SEO free ad spend, a site built around your actual business — your work, your area, your services — gives people a reason to choose you before you've said a word. Your website is your first impression, and it works around the clock on behalf of your business.
